We Heart Nail Art! <3

While I was catching the train home from work I was interrupted by a continuous taping. I glanced up from my paper and noticed two pairs of hands gripping the hand rail in front of me with strikingly designed nails I thought only existed in glossy magazines. One of the girls had a beautiful floral design on each of her finger tips while the other had polka dots with little raised bow jewels. Amazed at how detailed and perfect they looked I starred and wondered where I could get a good set of nails just like that! I couldn’t wait to tell the rest of the kittens back at Kitten D’Amour HQ!

Nail design has been around for many years. Youthful pastel nail shades were popular in the ’60s and in the 80′s a kaleidoscope of nail varnishes were made available, from neon yellows to glowing fuchsias to shocking blues. Innovation in nail technology also has continued with Kitten D’amour’s favourite, the 2007 invention of Minx stick-ons. Nail art today is becoming more of a fashionable craze then ever before, with amazing painted designs, beads, jewels and colours that look like yummy candy not to mention the celebrities such as Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Alexa Chung flashing their fingers for the cameras!

After some thorough nail research Kitten D’Amour stumbled upon Lisa, a polish-holic and website author of www.nail-art-101.com. Lisa shares her passion for nails with beautiful images of nail art inspiration, tips on nail care, beginner and intermediate nail art tutorials and her own Etsy shop Pimped Out Polish to purchase her creative nail designs!

Ahoy me hearties, the Kittens Overboard collection is ‘ere!

Kittens Overboard

Kittens Overboard is a very retro pin-up 1950′s collection featuring printed red polka dot cotton, navy cotton, sailor style striped ribbon and red and white button features. The collection consists of eleven designs ranging from dresses, skirts, shirts, a bustier and camisole all of which are made with quality fabric, love and attention to detail. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a dream when you try one of these amazing designs on.

Deck Dress

Our favourite is the Kittens Overboard Deck Dress, designed to sit just above the knee this cutesy polka-dot wonder is a great fit for all shapes, with the flared “A” line skirt accentuating already god given curves or simply enhancing shape to a slender figure this dress is polka perfection. The best feature is the contrasting navy cotton sailor style collar and pockets edged with red, white and navy ribbon not to mention it comes with a matching waist belt! This design is best worn with red lipstick, Kitten D’Amour red polka dot scarf and a bit of sassy attitude. Raoww!

Feburary 2012 Kitten of the Month runner up, Congratulations Samantha!

Every month we receive hundreds of wonderful photos from all our kitten fans in their favourite Kitten D’Amour attire. This beautiful lady caught our eye and kindly took the time to talk to us about her life in LA, traveling, and her passion for fashion.

Name: Samantha
Age: 27

Kitten D’Amour: Congratulations Samantha, we couldn’t choose one Kitten this month and you’re our lucky runner up. So tell me a little about yourself, where are you from? And where are you living now?

Samantha: I grew up in Brisbane (where I fell in love with Kitten D’Amour, back when it first opened on Adelaide Street).  I’ve also lived in Melbourne, Canberra and Osaka, and am now studying in sunny LA

Samantha in Hollywood Blv

Kitten D’Amour: Wow, you’ve traveled a lot!  How did you discover Kitten D’Amour?

Samantha: I was studying at UQ, and my girlfriends and I had to walk along Adelaide Street each day to change from the train to the bus.  I think it was about three days after Kitten D’Amour (then Sex Kitten) first opened its doors, when my best friend said ‘there’s a gorgeous new shop on Adelaide Street…you have to see it, it’s so you!’. It turns out she knew me well!

Kitten D’Amour: What is your educational background?

Samantha: For some reason, I can’t seem to get away from University.  I’m now doing a PhD in Economics at, of all places, the Caltech of Big Bang theory!  I’d like to say that the show is wrong about nerds, but the truth is I often feel like a Penny among Sheldons…

Kitten D’Amour: What are your general professional and non-professional interests?

Samantha: Hmmm well, I love clothes (especially vintage), and I’ve recently gotten into upcycling.  I’m an economist by profession, which means I get paid to spend a lot of time thinking about shopping!  I also dance – West Coast Swing most recently, but also modern jive, ballroom, tango (I took lessons in Argentina) and Salsa.  I love to travel and see the world, which might also be why I keep moving around.

Kitten D’Amour: What a fun hobby! Which magazines do you read and which TV shows and films do you like the most?

Downton AbbeySamantha: Downton Abbey, Pushing Daisies, Firefly, Big Bang Theory (I think that one is required for all Caltech students).  The most recent thing I read was The Hunger Games, and I can’t wait for the movie.  I enjoy reading about fashion too, but I find the internet to be much better than any magazines I’ve come across.

Kitten D’Amour: What is it that inspires you?

Samantha: My baby sister.  She passed away last year, but she was one of the most talented artists/photographers/filmmakers I have ever met.

Kitten D’Amour: Describe how you would like to spend the perfect day?

Samantha: I’d sleep in, then take my brother and sisters (both of them) to brunch down at Santa Monica beach.  We’d laze around down there, maybe go for a walk.  Coffee and vintage shopping with my Mum afterward (stopping by the brand new Kitten D’Amour shop in Hollywood hint hint!).  Then a romantic dinner with my boyfriend in the evening, before going out for a night of dancing together.

Kitten D’Amour: That sounds fantastic! What are some of your favourite designers/clothing stores/ websites?

Samantha: Kitten D’Amour of course!  And my ever-growing 50s dress collection, which I adore. I’m also a style ambassador for modcloth.com, which has helped me find other such delights as Bernie Dexter, Darling and Ryu.

Samantha

Kitten D’Amour: How would you define your personal style?

Samantha: Boldly feminine.  My goal is to look like a work of art every time I left home.

Kitten D’Amour: What do you like most about Kitten D’Amour?

Samantha: It manages to be beautiful and unique at the same time.  I have hunted and hunted for anything similar in the US, and I just can’t find it.

Kitten D’Amour: What is your favourite Kitten D’Amour design and why?

Samantha: You have to promise not to hold me to this one – since there will probably be a new design out next week that I will like even better!  I think the collection I own the most pieces from is Roses, but the new Love and Cherish is to die for.

Kitten D’Amour: Tell us about an occasion where you were complimented for wearing a Kitten D’Amour outfit.

Samantha: Other than every single time I wear one?  Americans are much more forward than Australians – I was literally stopped on Hollywood Boulevard several times the day I took this photo because people wanted to compliment me on my dress. If you could have any garment from our collections which would it be? And why?

Samantha

Kitten D’Amour: If you could have any garment from our collections which would it be? And why?

Samantha: I missed out on the Sunday Picnic Dress ages and ages ago, and I still regret that.

Kitten D’Amour: Thank you for your time Samantha, and we wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors!

Till next time,

To love or loath, Socks & Heels

Our so called “summer” is drawing to a near and has been rather dull this year. Sad face. There’s been more rain than sun and the thought of wearing boots is rather off putting and looks strangely odd in a season where there is meant to be sunburn? I myself suffer from cold feet syndrome and the thought of wearing sandals in windy wet conditions like today sends my feet into a frosty shiver.

This brings me to one of my favourite looks, Socks and Heels. As strangely as they sound together they not only solve my summery foot chills they actually look great with your killer heels and favourite summery dresses.

We love this trend, but it can be a bit tricky to pull off. Keep in mind that wearing socks will visually cut off your legs, so if you’re not willing to lose a few inches of leg height, this trend may not be for you. Here are a few tips for successfully wearing socks with heels:

  • Choose thin socks made with a nylon blend. Cotton socks tend to be too thick and can stretch out or sag.
  • Lace socks with frills and bows make any summer dress more dazzling for evening wear.
  • Make sure the top of the socks hit at a slim part of your ankle or calf for the most flattering look.
  • The easiest way to wear the look is to match your sock colour to your shoe colour.
  • Your skirt or dress hem should be short – mid thigh or higher to exaggerate your pins.

A good pair of socks is a fairly inexpensive investment, so this is an easy way to experiment with your summer/autumn look. Have fun with it!

We want to hear from you!

Where to shop: Half Pretties, Tootsie Shoppe, Tabio

Kitten D’Amour: Tell us a little about yourself Violet. Where are you from? And where are you  living now?

Violet I was born in England, and then lived in Australia for four years and I’ve spent the last six months in LA.

Kitten D’Amour: What’s your educational background?

Violet: I was moved up a year when I moved to Australia, graduated high school (and beauty school at the same time – I took a day out a week for the last year to get my cert III in Beauty Therapy) I then got two makeup diplomas, one from Australia and one from LA.

Airbrushing & hair - Violet, Model - Cris Sposito

Kitten D’Amour: What are your general professional and non-professional interests?

Violet: Professional = makeup artistry! And I love modelling on the side, it’s always fun!

Kitten D’Amour: What does fashion mean to you?

Violet: Fashion is something that everyone explores to his or her own individual tastes, it’s a mass industry presented to the world through every media possible!

Kitten D’Amour: Who are some of your favourite designers or clothing stores?

Violet:  Kitten D’Amour of course! Beserk Clothing (I model for them sometimes which ROCKS because you get to work out what clothes fit you best when you buy from them!), Sequoia and Gita, Forgotten Saints and Gore Couture.

Kitten D’Amour: That’s quite a diverse range, so how would you define your personal style?

Violet: Ever changing! I can go from wearing a beachy dress to full on pvc, corsets and platform boots! I honestly don’t think I could put myself under a category because I wear so many different styles depending on my mood and what I’m doing/where I’m going.

Kitten D’Amour: How did you discover Kitten D’Amour?

Violet: I think a school friend of mine took me in a couple of years ago after school when I’d just gotten my lip pierced!

Kitten D’Amour: What do you like most about Kitten D’Amour?

Violet: The elegance! Everything in Kitten D’Amour is so classy and elegant I don’t know how any girl could not want to shop there… or any guy now want his girl to shop there! The clothes are always comfy too… so you can look amazing while still being comfy!

Kitten D’Amour: If you could have any garment from our collections which would it be? And why?

Violet: That’s the easiest question to answer! The black widow dress (in grape).  I fell in love with it in your Brisbane store with my baby sister a couple of days ago!
